Abstract

Drama and film have become media through which messages can be conveyed to wider audiences. In recent years, Korean dramas have emerged as a global phenomenon, capturing the attention of various countries, particularly Indonesia. One Korean drama series that has successfully gained significant attention is Queen of Tears. This drama is intended not only to entertain but also to convey values regarding the criticism of patriarchal culture in South Korea. This study aims to interpret the underlying messages regarding the criticism of patriarchal culture in the drama Queen of Tears. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic method. The findings indicate that Queen of Tears carries a denotative meaning through its depiction of marital conflict caused by differences in social status. On a connotative level, the drama conveys messages about the criticism of patriarchal culture that is common in society. It also reflects cultural myths related to patriarchal values in Korea. Through this analysis, it is evident that Queen of Tears serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for social criticism and a reflection of cultural norms and values in Korean society, especially in patriarchal culture. The drama encourages audiences to foster mutual respect and understanding, particularly for those who are entering or navigating married life.
