Abstract

Patriarchal representation has a cultural context that often reflects male dominance that reduces the role of women to secondary, creating social norms that perpetuate gender inequality. This study aims to analyze the representation of patriarchy and moral values in family relationships shown in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap (2022) using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The film shows the dynamics of a Batak family rich in traditional values and patriarchal structures, with the father as the center of power. Using qualitative methods and analysis of Barthes' three levels of meaning denotation, connotation, and myth, the study identifies visual and verbal signs that reflect male dominance, women's secondary roles, and social pressure in Batak culture. The research findings indicate that movies not only function as a medium of entertainment, but also as a place of reflection that conveys ideology symbolically. The movie reveals how patriarchal structures are accepted as normal through symbols and narratives, and provides possibilities for change towards more equitable family relationships. In this way, the semiotic approach contributes to uncovering the depth of cultural meaning contained in visual media.
