Abstract

This study aims to analyze the self-disclosure strategies employed by LGBT individuals in building interpersonal communication through the online dating application bumble. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, the research draws on Self-Disclosure Theory and Social Penetration Theory by Altman and Taylor as the main analytical frameworks. The study explores the forms, motivations, and challenges of self-disclosure among LGBT informants in virtual interactions. Findings indicate that self-disclosure is conducted selectively, gradually, and strategically—guided by safety considerations, relational goals, and social acceptance. The interpersonal communication observed reflects the process of social penetration, where individuals progressively reveal deeper personal information as trust develops. Beyond serving as a tool for identity formation, self-disclosure acts as an adaptive strategy to navigate social stigma and pursue relational harmony. Bumble emerges as a digital space that facilitates LGBT self-expression within the constraints of prevailing social norms. This research contributes to the study of digital interpersonal communication by highlighting the nuances of self-disclosure among vulnerable groups in online settings.
